The Wapack Mountain range is a place of scenic natural beauty and rugged wilderness. The summits of this mountain range lie between 1800 feet and 2290 feet. It is one of the best places to come for camping, mountaineering, backpacking, hiking and other outdoor activities.
The Pack Monadnock Mountain is the highest peak in the Wapack Mountain Range and it is located between the towns of Peterborough and Temple. The oldest hiking trail in the United States, the Wapack Trail, passes through this mountain. The Wapack Trail passes through Greenfield and its course meanders through Pack Monadnock Mountain. This mountain reaches to a height of 2270 feet above sea level and is between latitudes N 42.862029 and W -71.878689.
Much of the mountain terrain lies in the Miller State park; the eastern side of it drains into the Souhegan River, and the western side passes into the Merrimack River and the Contoocook River. One of the most interesting aspects of this mountain is that it serves as the base for the Pack Monadnock Raptor Migration Observatory. Bird watchers come to this observatory to witness the hawk migration that occurs here annually. When the migration season is at its highest point, bird watchers will enjoy the sight of hundreds of hawks flying high as they migrate south.
If you are looking for an easier hiking point, the North Pack Monadnock is your best choice. On a clear day, you can see Manchester city from the top of North Pack Monadnock. Hiking can happen on this mountain throughout the year, and during winter, hikers should make use of snowshoes and crampons. April is not the ideal time to come here because of the mud season, so hikers are advised to avoid this place during this time.
The mountain’s summit has an air pollutions monitoring station and there is a road from the south to the mountain’s summit.
