Before you empty your dresser drawers and closet into your suitcases for a road trip, take some time to determine what you will need for the trip. It is important to start planning what you will pack months before you go on the trip.
First, you cannot successfully pack without knowing where you are going, what the weather is like, and how long you will be traveling. When you know this information, packing can get started. You will want to pack for the weather. Make sure you check out the weather of the location for the length of time you will be there.
Second, create a checklist of everything you will need to bring with you. Include clothing, shoes, toiletries, maps, GPS, reading material, food, traveling and hotel information, and emergency materials. Remember the first-aid kit, driver’s license, games, batteries, flashlights, prescriptions, vitamins, cameras, wet wipes for the car, and more.
It would be wise to make multiple lists. What do you need when you are in the car traveling? What do you need when you are at the hotel? What do you need if you have an emergency? You will want to make the list after you have done all of your research for the trip, but before you actually start to pack.
Third, determine how you are going to pack your gear. Will you put everything into the same bag or have multiple suitcases? You will want to determine how many bags everyone in your party can bring and make sure everyone knows. Do not be afraid to compare your packing list to your friends. They may remember something you need.
Fourth, do not just throw your stuff into the bag, zip it up, and put the bag in the trunk. There are ways to fold or move objects around so that you do not have too many bags. Consider rolling your clothes. This will create more space in your bag. Put the same materials together.
Lastly, do not forget your list. You want to make sure you have everything before you leave for your destination.
